Fourth Quarter Project: "Everything I need to know I learned from a children's book"

Cadet Teaching—4th Quarter Project
“Everything I Need to Know I Learned from a Children’s Book”
Due:  May 15, 2012, by 3:30 p.m.
We all know how important reading is to a child’s success in school.
According to Daniels and Zemelman in Subjects Matter,
  • Children read for information and pleasure
  • Children need to read a lot: volume, quantity, practice count
  • Children should read at comfortable recreation level
  • Children need a real choice of reading materials—kids choose
  •  Children should have books read aloud to them
For the final project of the year, you will read a selection of children’s
literature (you choose) according to the following rubric
  • You may read only 1 Dr. Seuss book
  •  You may read only 1 volume of a series
  •  At least 4 of the books should be nonfiction (picture books work)
  • You should read at least 3 chapter books (4th grade level and under)--1 must be a Newbery Award winner
  •  You may read materials on the children’s shelves here in the MC.MC also owns Newbery Award books for the past several years.  At least 1 book must be a Caldecott award winner (illustrations).
    1. Caldecott winner list:  http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/caldecottmedal/caldecotthonors/caldecottmedal
    2.  Newbery winner list:  http://www.ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/newberymedal/newberyhonors/newberymedal
    The Project:
To read 12 children’s books over the quarter.
To create a reading guide for yourself and others.
    The Reading Guide:
You may choose from the following as the “delivery system” for your reading guide:
    ·         Blogger.com
    ·         Bookemon.com, or
    ·         A conventional print notebook
For each book include the following:
    ·         A bibliographic citation (MLA form is fine)
    ·         A color picture of the book’s cover
    ·         A brief synopsis—in your own words
    ·         Content (math, science, literature, etc.) area for the book
    ·         Approximate reading level and audience
    ·         1 creative activity you might use with children to
reinforce comprehension and enjoyment of the
          book (should be age/grade appropriate).

    Project Rubric
Each book entry is worth 10 points                         ______120
Include your philosophy on the importance
of reading and a statement about your
               experiences with books and reading
(maybe talk about a favorite book or
books). Should be 1 page in length.                    _______30
